Happy Energy Efficiency Day!
Energy efficiency is about using less energy to get the same job done – and in the process, avoiding high energy bills and unnecessary pollution. Want to help the environment and save money? Um, how about yes! Maybe it’s time to upgrade to an energy-efficient appliance. Many energy-efficient appliances typically cost the same as their inefficient counterparts. If the cost is a little extra, it is easily repaid in energy savings over a few years and sometimes a few months. Here are some important questions to ask when determining whether or not to upgrade that old appliance for an energy-efficient model:
1) What is the life-cycle cost? The life-cycle of your appliance factors in the initial cost, maintenance and repairs, the expected lifespan, and the energy required to run said appliance. A low grade, inefficient appliance with a low up front price tag may cost you more in the long run when you factor in the cost of repairs, energy cost, and the lifespan of the product. It’s important to look at the whole picture, or the life-cycle cost, when determining which appliance to purchase.
2) Are there any rebates or tax credits available?
Rebates are most common for high-efficiency refrigerators, clothes washers, lighting products, cooling equipment, and home energy improvements like air sealing and insulation. Rebate programs are much more common among electric companies than gas companies, although some gas utilities offer rebates for high-efficiency furnaces and boilers. If you plan to buy a major appliance soon, ask your utility if it offers rebates for efficient models.
Tax credits for residential energy efficiency have now been extended retroactively, through December 31, 2020. You could save 10% of cost up to $500 or a specific amount from $50-$300 if you purchase an approved energy star certified product for your existing primary residential home.
3) How do I know if an appliance is energy-efficient.
