Your HVAC System & Christmas Tree Safety

Whether you prefer real or artificial, your Christmas tree is the centerpiece of your holiday décor. Picking the best location is essential for safety and making sure you have a very Merry Christmas!

Whether you do bring home a real tree or have a beautiful artificial tree, here are a few pointers for a safe and happy holiday season:

Placement: a live or artificial tree sitting too close to a vent, or a heating source becomes a fire hazard. While staying away from a fireplace may seem obvious, don’t forget about ductwork too! A live tree too close to a heating vent can dry out your tree prematurely and shorten its lifespan. As this tree begins to wilt and drop needles this can cause lots of issues for your furnace. In addition, if your tree is blocking a cold air return this can make your whole system work harder and lead to costly breakdowns.

Proper Hydration: Make sure your fresh cut live tree is displayed in water. This is the most effective way to keep them fresh and minimize needle loss. If your tree does begin to shed needles, they can obstruct your vent or fall into it affecting air quality.

Watch your Thermostat: If your home’s air is too warm and dry in the winter, it can dry out your live Christmas tree. This will also result in needles everywhere and as previously mentioned will wreak havoc on your furnace! If possible, keep your thermostat set just a little lower and keep your live tree in top condition all season long.

Good Housekeeping: If you’ve got an artificial tree, be sure to dust it off before putting it up. Artificial trees that have been stored over a humid summer can develop mold causing poor indoor air quality. In addition, dust particulates built up on the branches can promote allergies and breathing issues. Whether you choose a real or artificial tree, it’s likely to circulate an increased number of particulates impacting air quality. To help keep the air clean, change your HVAC system’s air filter and check it a couple of times throughout the holiday season.
