Signs of spring are starting to pop up, but the temperature is still a bit temperamental. You may want to use a space heater to warm that specific room in your home without having to elevate the thermostat to heat your entire house. Using a space heater, however, has its risks. Follow our 5 safety tips for keeping your home safe!

1) Plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet. Don’t use an extension cord as it can cause the heater to overheat as well as be a tripping hazard.

2) Buy a space heater unit with an automatic shutoff, just in case it gets knocked over or you just simply forget to shut it off.

3) Only use a space heater in a low-moisture room. Excessive moisture, like the moisture levels of a bathroom, can damage the unit and cause malfunction.

4) Keep your unit at least 3 feet from kids, pets, and flammable items such as curtains, clothing, furniture, or bedding.

5) Always follow the directions and take a broken space heater to a qualified appliance service center.

Good luck staying comfortable this spring and don’t forget to schedule a spring HVAC clean-and-check with one of our licensed technicians to keep your HVAC running at maximum efficiency all year.
